Bishop’s Opening: develop before committing the knight

With 2.Bc4 you aim at f7 before playing Nf3. This allows d3 and c3 structures, but Black can answer with ...c6 and ...d5. Pressure on f7 gives direction; it is not a mating threat by itself. Compare Black attacking e4 with Black developing the bishop to c5. The same white bishop needs different plans depending on which pawns Black can advance.

The key idea

The bishop on c4 needs central support and a retreat if ...d5 arrives.

Example 1

Against ...Nf6: protect e4 and recognise ...d5.

  1. d3 d3 defends e4 against the f6-knight and opens the c1-bishop’s diagonal.
  2. c6 ...c6 prepares ...d5 with pawn support. Watch the centre, not only f7.
  3. Nf3 Nf3 develops towards e5 and prepares kingside castling.
  4. d5 ...d5 attacks the c4-bishop and challenges e4. Deal with the centre before attacking.
  5. Bb3 Bb3 retreats the bishop from the d5-pawn’s attack and keeps the diagonal towards f7. Castling without addressing that attack would lose the bishop.

Example 2

Against ...Bc5: prepare the centre patiently.

  1. d3 d3 supports e4 and frees the c1-bishop without moving the c4-bishop again.
  2. d6 ...d6 supports e5. Both bishops point towards the opposing king, but the centre stays closed.
  3. c3 c3 prepares d4, which would gain space and attack the c5-bishop.
  4. Bb6 ...Bb6 takes the bishop away from a future d4 while keeping its diagonal towards f2.

Practice

You have White. Reproduce the first example’s plan in two decisions and watch the reply. The bishop on c4 needs central support and a retreat if ...d5 arrives.

  1. d3 defends e4 against the f6-knight and opens the c1-bishop’s diagonal. Protect e4 with another pawn and free Bc1. Nc3 also keeps a similar evaluation but requires a different sequence; here you practise d3.
  2. The position remains balanced. After ...d5, check whether your bishop is attacked before castling. Develop a knight or prepare the bishop’s retreat before ...d5. You can play Nf3, Bb3, Ne2, Nc3.
