Center Game: the queen needs a safe square

Qxd4 immediately recovers the central pawn, but ...Nc6 develops while attacking your queen. See how to retreat to e3 and continue with minor pieces. The d-file opens: queenside castling requires clearing c1 and b1 and watching attacks on the queen. If Black prepares ...Bg7, developing and supporting e4 still comes before a pawn attack. Both lines end in a playable position, not a finished attack.

The key idea

The queen recovered material; now the minor pieces must recover the time.

Example 1

Against ...Nc6: retreat the queen and clear c1.

  1. Qe3 Qe3 escapes the knight and supports e4. The queen occupies a square the c1-bishop could use.
  2. Nf6 ...Nf6 develops with pressure on e4. Black uses the time spent retreating the queen.
  3. Bd2 Bd2 develops through the available square and clears c1. The b1-knight must still move before queenside castling.
  4. Be7 ...Be7 prepares kingside castling. Both sides keep developing; an open centre does not demand an immediate attack.

Example 2

Against ...g6: develop against the fianchetto.

  1. Be2 Be2 develops the king’s bishop. The g1-knight must still move before kingside castling.
  2. Bg7 ...Bg7 completes the fianchetto: the bishop eyes the h8-a1 diagonal.
  3. Nc3 Nc3 develops while defending e4. Qe3 is no longer the only piece protecting that pawn.
  4. d6 ...d6 frees the c8-bishop and controls e5. Black prepares the centre before castling.

Practice

You have White. Reproduce the first example’s plan in two decisions and watch the reply. The queen recovered material; now the minor pieces must recover the time.

  1. Qe3 escapes the knight and supports e4. The queen occupies a square the c1-bishop could use. Retreat the queen while continuing to protect e4. Qc4, Qd3, Qa4 also keep a similar evaluation but require a different sequence; here you practise Qe3.
  2. Your minor piece enters play. Keep developing and check king safety before choosing where to castle. Develop a minor piece to support the centre and move closer to castling. You can play Bd2, Nc3, Bd3, Bb5, Nf3.
