Bird: control e5 and protect the king

With 1.f4 you target e5 but open diagonals near your king. Compare quiet development against ...d5 with a response to the From Gambit; taking pawns requires checking for checks. Before each capture, check the diagonal towards e1 and which piece covers h4. Against a quiet centre, Bb2 helps contest e5. Against the From, after ...Bd6, retreating the knight to f3 takes priority: it covers h4 and prevents the queen-and-bishop attack.

The key idea

The f4-pawn needs pieces that support the centre and protect the king.

Example 1

Against ...d5: prepare both bishops.

  1. e3 e3 opens the f1-bishop and supports f4. The king still needs to castle.
  2. e6 ...e6 supports d5 and releases the f8-bishop. Black also prepares king safety.
  3. b3 b3 prepares Bb2: that bishop and the f4-pawn can work together against e5.
  4. Be7 ...Be7 clears f8 for castling. Advancing f4 has not created an immediate attack.

Example 2

Against the From: return to f3 to cover h4.

  1. Nf3 Nf3 develops and controls h4, a sensitive square with the f2-pawn gone.
  2. dxe5 ...dxe5 recovers the advanced pawn and opens the f8-bishop’s diagonal.
  3. Nxe5 Nxe5 recovers material with an active piece. Check threats before trying to keep the extra pawn.
  4. Bd6 ...Bd6 attacks the e5-knight and threatens ...Qh4+. Cover h4 again before developing another piece.
  5. Nf3 Nf3 retreats the knight and covers h4, keeping the advantage. After 5.Nc4? comes 5...Qh4+ 6.g3 Bxg3+ 7.hxg3 Qxg3#, mate.

Practice

You have White. Reproduce the first example’s plan in two decisions and watch the reply. The f4-pawn needs pieces that support the centre and protect the king.

  1. e3 opens the f1-bishop and supports f4. The king still needs to castle. Open the f1-bishop’s diagonal and reinforce f4 with a central pawn. b3, d3, g3, a4, c3, d4, Ne5, a3, c4, Na3 also keep a similar evaluation but require a different sequence; here you practise e3.
  2. The f4-pawn still needs support and a safe king. You have kept a playable position in which to continue developing. Coordinate your pieces behind f4: develop, support the centre or gain space for the bishops. You can play b3, a4, g3, Ne5, Qe2, c4, Be2, Nc3, Na3, d4, c3, a3, Bd3, d3. Bb5+ also keeps a similar evaluation but requires a different sequence; choose from the options listed here.
