Open files and the seventh rank

The key idea

Open file → seventh rank → doubling: your rooks' professional career. One rook on the seventh ties the opponent down; two rooks on the seventh usually win by demolition — the famous 'blind pigs' that devour everything they touch.

Example 1 · One rook on the seventh: the revenue plan

A rook ending with a single open file. Watch the complete plan — and its honest valuation: initiative and comfort, not an automatic win.

1. Rd7 The seventh! The only open file was the d-file, the rook already occupied it… and the seventh rank is its natural destination: from there it attacks the sideways pawns — where no pawn can defend itself alone — and watches the king's rank.
2. Rc8 Black organises for a passive defence: c8 protects c7. Notice the silent price: THEIR rook has just signed a security-guard contract — it won't be attacking again.
3. Kf1 And White, unhurried: the king comes up to work, since the ending is already comfortable.
4. Kf8 Black's king copies the idea, with one difference: this one comes to help a defence; White's comes to support an invasion.
5. Ke2 The honest verdict on the rook in the seventh, engine in hand: a fraction of an advantage, not a win — but look who has a plan (advance the king, harass pawns, choose the moment to trade or double) and who's just waiting. That's what the seventh rank is: a perpetual annuity of initiative. And if its sibling ever arrives… move on to Example 2.

Example 2 · Two rooks on the seventh: the blind pigs

When the second rook arrives on the seventh, the revenue plan turns into demolition: they defend each other and devour everything they touch. Here, even the king.

1. Rxh7+ The feast is already underway — the rooks came in through the g-file and have eaten f7 and g7; the king fled to the corner. Now, the second bite WITH CHECK: and the rook is untouchable, because its sibling on a7 defends it along the freshly cleared rank. That's the secret of the blind pigs: on the seventh rank they protect each other while they devour.
2. Kg8 The king's forced pendulum. It no longer decides anything.
3. Rag7# Mate: the second rook joins the banquet, and the king has no world left — one sibling covers h8, the other is untouchable on g7, and its own rook blocks f8. Between the revenue of Example 1 and this demolition stands exactly ONE more rook. That's why the lesson's full plan ends in 'doubling': the first rook on the seventh is uncomfortable; the second one executes. Once you have one there, you already know your next question: how do I bring in its sibling?

Practice

Your blind pigs are already hard at work: one rook inside, the king in the corner. Finish the demolition — they eat while protecting each other, all the way to mate.

1. A bite with check — and untouchable: your rook on a7 defends its sibling along the cleared rank. The pigs' secret, in action. The pawn on h7 is within reach of your rook on g7, with check. And your other rook protects it along the rank.
2. MATE — the second rook joins the seventh, and the king runs out of planet: one sibling covers h8, the other is untouchable on g7, and its own rook steals f8 from it. The blind pigs, served. Few images in chess teach as much about piece cooperation. Bring the rook from a7 to the feast: on g7 it finishes, with h8 already covered by its sibling.
