Four Knights: break symmetry with a purpose
Loading puzzles…
Text
All four knights develop before the structure is settled. Compare keeping the centre with d3 and opening it with d4. With the pawn on d2, the c3-knight is not pinned yet; moving that pawn while the king remains on e1 allows ...Bb4 to pin it. After an exchange on c3 or c6, count the pawns and open diagonals. Doubled pawns alone do not evaluate a position: the remaining pieces’ activity matters.
The key idea
Before moving the d-pawn, check which knight would become pinned and where your king will be.
Example 1
Castle before moving the d-pawn to prevent the pin.
- O-O With the pawn on d2 there is no pin yet. Castling before d3 prevents the b4-bishop from pinning the c3-knight to the king.
- O-O Black also castles. Copying makes sense here because it protects the king and activates the rook.
- d3 d3 supports e4 and frees the c1-bishop. You keep the tension before choosing d4.
- Bxc3 ...Bxc3 trades a bishop for the knight. After bxc3 you will have doubled pawns and the bishop pair.
Example 2
With d4, exchanges transform the structure.
- Nxd4 Nxd4 recovers the pawn and centralises the knight without bringing out the queen.
- Bb4 ...Bb4 pins c3 to the king on e1. The e4-pawn now needs attention.
- Nxc6 Nxc6 trades the d4-knight for the defender of e5 and forces Black to define the pawn structure.
- bxc6 ...bxc6 keeps d7 available for ...d5. Doubled pawns also control central squares.
Practice
You have White. Reproduce the first example’s plan in two decisions and watch the reply. Before moving the d-pawn, check which knight would become pinned and where your king will be.
- With the pawn on d2 there is no pin yet. Castling before d3 prevents the b4-bishop from pinning the c3-knight to the king. Get the king to safety before moving the d2-pawn, which prevents the pin on c3. d3, a4, Bxc6, Nd5, a3 also keep a similar evaluation but require a different sequence; here you practise O-O.
- You keep options in the centre. After ...Bxc3, check which pawns can recapture and which bishops remain. With your king castled, prepare central play or decide what to do with the b5-bishop. You can play d3, Bxc6, a4, Re1, Ba4, d4, h3, Qe2. Nd5 also keeps a similar evaluation but requires a different sequence; choose from the options listed here.
Before moving the d-pawn, check which knight would become pinned and where your king will be. Next step: return to this position and explain what changes after a different reply.
