Queen’s Gambit Accepted: recover and develop

Here Black takes on c4 and develops sensibly instead of clinging to the pawn. As White, compare a calm recovery after e3 with the broad centre built by e4. Recovering material does not finish the opening: ...c5 or ...e5 challenges your central pawns and demands careful development. The examples end with unresolved tension: they teach how to continue, not how to finish the game.

The key idea

Recover c4 while developing when possible; if you play e4 first, prepare for ...e5.

Example 1 · Recovery with Bxc4

  1. Bxc4 Recover c4 while developing the bishop: material returns without complications.
  2. c5 ...c5 immediately attacks your d4-pawn.
  3. O-O Castle before resolving the central tension.
  4. a6 ...a6 prepares ...b5 against the bishop; recovering the pawn does not remove counterplay.

Example 2 · The e4 centre

Develop the knight against e5 before recovering c4.

  1. Nf3 Develop the knight against e5 before recovering c4.
  2. Bb4+ The check develops the bishop with tempo.
  3. Nc3 Block with the knight, which becomes pinned to the king: unpin it before relying on its central captures.
  4. exd4 ...exd4 threatens ...dxc3: the pinned knight cannot escape. Recapture on d4 now with the f3-knight before thinking about recovering c4.

Practice

You play White. Practice two decisions from this line: Recovery with Bxc4.

  1. Recover c4 while developing the bishop: material returns without complications. Nc3 and h3 are also playable. Here recover c4 with the bishop: this sequence practises immediate castling after ...c5. Be2, a4, a3 are also playable, with different continuations.
  2. You choose a sound continuation; watch the central tension as you complete development. There are several sound continuations: O-O, h3, Nc3, Qe2, b3, Nbd2, a4, Bb3. Choose one and check what remains to be developed.

After recovering the gambit pawn, identify Black’s central break and your king’s situation before gaining more space.
