Danish Gambit: activity for a pawn

With c3 you offer a pawn to open lines. See how ...d5 challenges the centre and how to develop when Black accepts. We study Nxc3: offering b2 as well is not necessary to understand compensation. If the c-pawn recaptures on d4, notice the isolated pawn. When down material, castling and piece threats matter more than new flank pushes.

The key idea

A pawn sacrifice demands quick development; if your opponent returns material, adapt the plan.

Example 1

Black declines with ...d5: resolve the centre.

  1. exd5 exd5 removes the pawn attacking e4. You do not preserve the gambit at any cost.
  2. Qxd5 ...Qxd5 recaptures. With your pawn on c3, Nc3 cannot gain a tempo.
  3. cxd4 cxd4 recovers the other pawn. An isolated d4-pawn remains: activity now, care in the endgame.
  4. Nc6 ...Nc6 develops and pressures d4. Black attacks the structure created by the exchange.

Example 2

A pawn down: develop both wings.

  1. Nf3 Nf3 develops towards e5 and d4. A pawn down, you must use your tempi.
  2. Bc5 ...Bc5 eyes f2 and prepares castling. The defender can develop actively too.
  3. Bc4 Bc4 eyes f7 and enables castling. Initiative is built by adding pieces.
  4. d6 ...d6 frees the c8-bishop and controls e5. Black catches up after spending time capturing.

You have White. Reproduce the first example’s plan in two decisions and watch the reply. A pawn sacrifice demands quick development; if your opponent returns material, adapt the plan.

  1. exd5 removes the pawn attacking e4. You do not preserve the gambit at any cost. Black attacks e4 from d5: remove that central pawn by capturing. Qxd4 also keeps a similar evaluation but requires a different sequence; here you practise exd5.
  2. You have kept the balance. Piece activity and the pawn structure left by exchanges matter more than insisting on the gambit. Recover d4 or bring a knight into central play. You can play cxd4, Nf3, Ne2.
