Philidor: space against a compact defence

The move ...d6 supports e5 but restricts the f8-bishop. With White, occupying d4 provides space for development; compare an immediate exchange on d4 with an exchange delayed until after development, and avoid attacking before developing. The d6-square can become a bishop target while e4 faces knight pressure. A useful move order combines development, central support and king safety.

The key idea

Space matters when your pieces can use it; prepare castling and watch e4.

Example 1

Black exchanges on d4: recapture actively.

  1. Nxd4 Nxd4 recaptures with the knight and leaves the c1-bishop free.
  2. Be7 ...Be7 prepares castling without obstructing the g8-knight.
  3. Bf4 Bf4 eyes d6. The pressure supports development; it does not win a pawn immediately.
  4. Nf6 ...Nf6 attacks e4. White’s space does not remove Black’s central threats.

Example 2

Black delays the exchange on d4: develop and restrict ...Bg4.

  1. Bc4 Bc4 develops towards f7 and clears f1 for castling.
  2. Be7 ...Be7 prepares castling. Black still keeps the e5-d4 tension.
  3. h3 h3 prevents ...Bg4 from bothering the f3-knight. It is useful while the centre remains closed.
  4. exd4 ...exd4 changes the structure: White must now recapture and complete development.

Practice

You have White. Reproduce the first example’s plan in two decisions and watch the reply. Space matters when your pieces can use it; prepare castling and watch e4.

  1. Nxd4 recaptures with the knight and leaves the c1-bishop free. Recover d4 actively with a minor piece rather than the queen. Qxd4, Bc4 also keep a similar evaluation but require a different sequence; here you practise Nxd4.
  2. You keep your space advantage. Watch the pressure on e4 and complete development. Use your space: develop, reinforce the centre or restrict ...Bg4. You can play Bf4, Nc3, c4, f3, Be2, Bd3, h3, g3, Be3.
