With c3 you prepare d4 but occupy the b1-knight’s natural square. Black can attack e4 with ...Nf6 or break with ...d5. See White’s advance and, in the second example, Black’s answer to Qa4. Qa4 exploits a pin on c6, but ...Bd7 can break it. Before counting a pawn as won, check whether your opponent gains tempi against the queen.

The key idea

c3 supports d4, but you must calculate the central counterattack before following your plan.

Example 1

Against ...Nf6: open lines even if e4 falls.

  1. d4 d4 uses c3’s support and opens the centre. You must account for the attack on e4.
  2. Nxe4 ...Nxe4 takes the pawn. The central knight becomes a target for developing pieces.
  3. Bd3 Bd3 develops with an attack on the e4-knight and prepares castling.
  4. d5 ...d5 supports e4. Black counters in the centre, so compensation is not an automatic mate.

Example 2

With Black against Qa4: break the pin.

  1. Bd7 ...Bd7 interposes between Qa4 and the king. The c6-knight can move without exposing check.
  2. exd5 exd5 takes the central pawn. The a4-queen lies on the d7-bishop’s diagonal, still blocked by the c6-knight.
  3. Nd4 ...Nd4 clears c6, uncovering the d7-bishop’s attack on Qa4 along d7-c6-b5-a4. The knight gains activity while the bishop forces the queen to move.
  4. Qd1 Qd1 removes the queen from attack. The pawn gained has cost development time.

Practice

You have White. Reproduce the first example’s plan in two decisions and watch the reply. c3 supports d4, but you must calculate the central counterattack before following your plan.

  1. d4 uses c3’s support and opens the centre. You must account for the attack on e4. Use c3 to support another pawn’s central advance. d3, Qa4, Bb5 also keep a similar evaluation but require a different sequence; here you practise d4.
  2. Bd3 develops with an attack on the e4-knight and prepares castling. Develop the king’s bishop with an attack on the knight that took e4.
