Sokolsky: exchange a wing pawn for a central pawn

With 1.b4 you gain flank space and prepare Bb2, but b4 can be captured. Both lines show how taking e5 offsets that loss. This does not excuse neglecting development: Black brings pieces out while taking the pawn. The exercise asks you to recognise material compensation without mistaking it for a winning advantage. After taking e5, look to free Bf1 and prepare castling before more flank moves.

The key idea

Count both pawns in the exchange and the tempi needed to recover them.

Example 1

...Bxb4: recover e5 with the bishop.

  1. Bxe5 Bxe5 recovers the central pawn: b4 was exchanged for e5, not lost for nothing.
  2. Nf6 ...Nf6 develops towards e4 and d5. Black is near castling while White still has pieces at home.
  3. e3 e3 opens the f1-bishop and supports d4. With material recovered, complete development.
  4. O-O ...O-O secures the king. The pawn exchange has not given White an immediate attack.

Example 2

...e5 after ...d5: exchange centrally with the knight.

  1. Nf3 Nf3 controls e5. Black’s central expansion can then be met by an active capture.
  2. e5 ...e5 offers the central pawn to open the f8-bishop against b4.
  3. Nxe5 Nxe5 takes the offered pawn. Black’s next capture will balance the material.
  4. Bxb4 ...Bxb4 recovers with development. The game stays balanced, with unusual pawn structures.

Practice

You have White. Reproduce the first example’s plan in two decisions and watch the reply. Count both pawns in the exchange and the tempi needed to recover them.

  1. Bxe5 recovers the central pawn: b4 was exchanged for e5, not lost for nothing. Your b2-bishop can take the central pawn Black left undefended.
  2. You keep a playable position after the pawn exchange. Complete development and watch for attacks on your pieces. After recovering e5, develop another piece, prepare the f1-bishop or retreat your active bishop to preserve it. You can play e3, Nf3, Bb2, g3, Nc3. c3, Bxf6, a3 also keep a similar evaluation but require a different sequence; choose from the options listed here.
